CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT STANDS APART

At Wine Country Woodcraft, we don’t settle for ordinary. While big-box stores often rely on mass-produced products made from low-grade or engineered wood, every piece created by Wine Country Woodcraft begins with carefully chosen premium woods sourced in the U.S., like walnut, maple, cherry, white oak and Douglas fir. These aren’t just beautiful woods—they’re durable, timeless materials that bring warmth, character, and elegance to each handcrafted board. By starting with the very best, we ensure every product is built to last and designed to impress.

For cutting and charcuterie boards, I hand-select exotic hardwood accents such as Wenge, Canary Wood, Padauk, Purpleheart and Bloodwood for their stunning natural colors and unique grain patterns. These species are rarely found in chain-store offerings because they’re more difficult to source and work with, but I see them as essential to creating true one-of-a-kind pieces. The bold purple of Purpleheart, the fiery orange of Chakte Viga, and the golden glow of Osage Orange are left to shine naturally—no artificial dyes or shortcuts, just the beauty of the wood itself.

Mass-produced cutting boards and serving trays often rely on glue-ups of low-grade materials that warp, dull, or fall apart over time. I take a different approach. My focus is on making heirloom-quality, and every piece is crafted with attention to stability, finish, and long-term durability. These boards aren’t just attractive—they’re strong enough to handle daily use while still retaining their natural beauty year after year.

Choosing Wine Country Woodcraft means choosing authenticity and artistry over factory production. Each board tells its own story through its grain, color, and character, something you simply won’t find on the shelves of big retailers. I’m passionate about these rare and classic woods, and the result is products that not only serve as practical kitchen and entertaining tools but also become conversation pieces and cherished keepsakes for years to come.

TYPES OF WOOD I USE IN MY PRODUCTS

Walnut

Walnut is a highly prized hardwood known for its rich, dark brown to purplish tones and elegant grain patterns. It is strong yet workable, making it a favorite for cutting boards, fine furniture and high-end woodworking projects. Walnut has good dimensional stability, resists warping, and finishes beautifully, highlighting its natural luster. Because of its beauty and durability, walnut is often used for heirloom pieces and decorative accents.

Maple

Maple is a dense and durable hardwood, typically light in color with subtle grain patterns that can range from straight to wavy or birds eye figuring. It is known for its strength and resistance to wear, which makes it popular for butcher blocks, cabinets, and work surfaces. Maple darkens to an amber hue over time with repeated use and conditioning, but it finishes smoothly and is often the choice for contemporary kitchens.

Cherry

Cherry is valued for its warm, reddish-brown color that deepens with age and exposure to light, giving it a timeless appeal. It has a fine, straight grain and smooth texture, making it easy to machine, carve, and polish. Cherry is part of the “holy trinity” of woods most frequently used for cutting boards. Its natural beauty and aging process make it a sought-after wood for projects that are meant to gain character over time.

Padauk

Padauk is an exotic hardwood native to Africa and Asia, known for its vibrant reddish-orange color that can deepen to a rich brown over time. It is dense, durable, and resistant to insects and decay, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor projects. Its striking color and interlocked grain make Padauk a standout choice for decorative cutting boards, musical instruments, and accent pieces.

Sapele

Sapele is a tropical hardwood from Africa, and is often used as a substitution for Mahogany.  It is dense, has striking grain patterns, reddish-brown color and impressive durability.  Sapele is a popular choice for cutting boards, outdoor furniture and musical instruments.

Purpleheart

Purpleheart is an exotic hardwood from Central and South America, famous for its deep purple hue that darkens with exposure to light. It is extremely dense, strong, and resistant to wear, making it well-suited for cutting board accents. While it can be difficult to work due to its hardness, its unique color and durability make it highly desirable for decorative and statement pieces.

Wenge

Wenge is an exotic African hardwood with a dark chocolate to nearly black color and striking linear grain patterns. It is extremely dense and durable, making it ideal for furniture, and accents that require strength and bold appearance, such as end grain cutting board borders. While challenging to work with due to its hardness and splintering tendencies, Wenge polishes to a smooth finish and creates a dramatic, modern look.

Bloodwood

Bloodwood is a South American hardwood prized for its deep red color and exceptional density. It is very hard, heavy, and durable, often used for fine furniture and decorative accents. While it can be brittle and challenging to work with, its striking color and glassy finish make it a popular choice for high-end projects, turning, and specialty items like cutting boards.

Osage Orange

Osage Orange is a dense North American hardwood with a brilliant yellow to golden-orange color that deepens to brown with age. Known for its incredible hardness and rot resistance, it has been traditionally used for fence posts, archery bows, and tool handles. Its toughness makes it somewhat difficult to work, but it polishes to a smooth, lustrous finish, making it valuable for specialty woodworking.

Canary Wood

Canary Wood is an exotic South American hardwood with a wide range of colors, from yellow and orange to red and purple streaks. It is durable, stable, and easy to work with, offering both strength and beauty. Its striking color variations and fine texture make it ideal for decorative furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments, and turned projects where visual appeal is key.

White Oak

White Oak is a versatile and durable hardwood with a light to medium brown color and distinctive ray flecks that give it a unique look when quarter-sawn. It is resistant to moisture and rot, making it a top choice for outdoor furniture, and boat building. White Oak is also widely used in cutting boards and mission-style furniture for its strength and attractive grain.

Black Limba

Black Limba is a West African hardwood known for its dramatic contrast between light golden-brown heartwood and dark streaks. It is moderately durable, easy to work, and often used for musical instruments, decorative veneers, and charcuterie boards. Its unique appearance and resonance qualities make it popular among guitar makers and woodworkers seeking distinctive aesthetics.

Chakte Viga (Orangeheart)

Chakte Viga, also called Orangeheart, is a vibrant hardwood from Central and South America, known for its rare, bright orange to reddish tones that mellow with age. It is dense and durable, with a fine, even texture that machines well. Because of its eye-catching color, it is often used for inlays and furniture accents where a bold visual statement is desired.

Poplar

Poplar is a lightweight hardwood that is widely available and affordable. Its color ranges from creamy white sometimes showing greenish or brown streaks, with a straight, uniform grain. While not as hard or durable as other hardwoods, Poplar machines easily, holds finish well, and offers a wonderful contrast when used throughout the construction of the Wine Country Woodcraft Travel Wine Tables.

Red Oak

Red Oak is one of the most commonly used hardwoods in North America, valued for its strength, affordability, and availability. It has a light to medium reddish-brown color with a prominent grain that takes finish well, making it versatile for a variety of applications. While less resistant to moisture than White Oak, it is used in cabinetry and interior trim. It is used for the borders of our Wine Country Woodcraft cork trivets.

Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir is a softwood with a reputation for strength and stability. It has a light brown to reddish hue with a straight, pronounced grain. Commonly used in construction, flooring, and beams, Douglas Fir is also chosen for our Custom Modular Wine Racks where a rustic yet strong wood is desired. It finishes well and has excellent dimensional stability, making it reliable in structural applications.

Lacewood

Lacewood is known for its stunning, lace-like grain pattern that shimmers when quarter-sawn. With warm reddish-brown tones and bold flecking, it’s a highly decorative hardwood often used in fine furniture, boxes, and accent pieces. Lacewood machines and finishes well, making it a favorite for projects where unique visual character truly stands out.
